. Bullas, a small town in the Murcia region has decide to
embrace renewable energy in the way of solar. According to a
report in El Mundo, Gehrlicher Solar company solar energy fields
are providing over 40% of energy needed for all properties in the
area.

Solar energy will reduce the CO2 emissions by over 7000 tonnes
per year which will bring the inline requirements that has been set
by Kyoto Protocol.

Bullas is more commonly known for its fine wine in the region but now solar energy is taking the lead in the public's eye.

A big advantage of the use of the solar field is that part of the energy produced by the solar panels is used by the local water plant which produces irrigation to the local land. The solar panels use 30% of the plant’s electricity consumption. The land where the solar panels are located is owned part by local authority's and local land owners.

Gehrlicher solar company are using profits from the solar field and are being invested in training workshop on solar energy and there are several solar powered open-air cooking facilities where people can go to have picnic. These cooking facilities can boil a litre of water in minutes.

Until now wind has been the preferred source of renewable energy for properties in Spain, and increasing areas of land in the north of Spain have had wind farms installed. However solar energy has taken longer to become an established source of eco-friendly energy, despite the fact that many areas of Spain enjoy more hours of sun per year than most other European countries.
